When calculating an equation with differing denominators - Change to the smallest denominator (largest number) in the group of fractions you are calculating. If you are calculating fractions with denominators that do not divide into each other change the fractions to decimals. You can memorize simple decimal equivalents; for instance; ½ = .5, Ό = .25, 1/8 =.125, 1/16 = .0625 For complex fractions you may need to use your calculator 1/12 = 1χ12=.0833 When you calculate feet and inches you will need to know how to calculate both fractions and decimals. You will need to know how to transpose them from one to the other and back again. Example 1); 21/2 + 311/16- 51/4 + 11/8 = First change all the fractions to 16ths 28/16 + 311/16 - 54/16 + 12/16= 28/16 +311/16 +12/16 = - = Example 2(Change the fractions into decimals); 59/16 + 37/8 - 7.2369 + 911/12= 9/16 to decimals = 9χ16 = 7/8 to decimals = = 11/12 to decimals = = 5. + 3. - 7. + 9. = You will need to be able to convert feet and inches into decimals and back again. 14= 14 = 1-2 Change 2 inches to decimals of a foot = 2 χ 12= The quick way to do this; is 14 χ 12" = |
