Headers - refer to the flats at the top of a door, window, wall opening or arch way.

Usually standard construction - must be part of the rough opening calculation. Header toggles must align with flat toggles.

Door & window Rough opening (R/O) sizes - counting backwards

Count back from the inside edge of the door or window jamb adding up the material thicknesses. Then allow 1/2″ over all for shimming. This will leave a 1/4″ gap on all sides for clearance.

Jamb - 3/4″ thick - 1/4″x 2 = 1 1/2″ + 1/2″ = 2″

R/O is 2″ larger than the finished opening.
