1 Yard = 3 feet 1 Foot = 12 inches Inches are divided into fractional increments with a variety of denominators; 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10, 1/12, 1/16... Denominators are the lower numbers of a fraction; example; 2 is the lower number of 1/2 The larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction, 1 inch = 2 x 1/2″, or 4 x 1/4″, or 8 x 1/8″ or 16 x 1/16″ (1/10″ & 1/12″ scales are found on the Framing Square) When calculating feet and inches do not forget there are 12 inches in 1 foot. When calculating an equation with differing denominators - Change to the largest number denominator in the group of fractions you are calculating. If you are calculating fractions with denominators that do not divide into each other change the fractions to decimals. You can memorize simple decimal equivalents; examples; 1/2 = .5, 1/4 = .25, 1/8 =.125, 1/16 = .0625 For complex fractions you may need to use your calculator 1/12th′ = 1÷12=.0833″ 1/8″ = .01′ Write your numbers down When calculating feet and inches you will need to know both fractions and decimals. You will need to know how to transpose them from one to the other and back again. Example 1); 2 1/2″ + 3 11/16″- 5 1/4″ + 1 1/8″ = 2 1/16″ First change all the fractions to 16ths 2 8/16″+ 3 11/16″-5 4/16″+1 2/16″= 2 1/16″ or 2 8/16 +3 11/16 +1 2/16 =6 21/16″ = 7 5/16″ 7 5/16″ - 5 4/16″ = 2 1/16″ Previous Exit Next Return to Home |
